Week of December 16:
Spelling Inventory in school to check progress

Our normal class period looks like this:

  • 12:30 pm - 12:40 pm Reading Fluency (ELAGSE5SF3-4)
Reading Fluency builds better reading comprehension skills.
  • 12:40 pm - 12:50 pm Spelling (ELAGSE5RF3-4)
We use Words Their Way, each student works at their level building their spelling foundational skills. We sort our words based on sounds and spelling patterns or by definitions each day. A Word Study sheet is completed each week with our spelling words.
  • 12:50 pm - 1:15 pm Reading Mini-Lesson/Writing Prompt (ELAGSE5W1, 3-6, 10)
Our lesson varies depending on where we are with a current paper, or if it's a daily "Mind Builder" lesson.
  • 1:15 pm - 1:35 pm Reading (ELAGSE5SL1-6)
We try to read everyday. Many times it's read aloud to model appropriate fluency, as well as noting what good readers think as they read.
  • 1:35 pm - 1:55 pm Reading Exercise
We use this time to complete an exercise about the day's reading assignment.
  • 1:55 pm - 2:00 pm Pack up

We will have our tests (Grammar, conventions, spelling) every Monday.

All work is turned in at the same place daily (the white drawer labeled "AC ELA" by the door. All assignments are due at the beginning of the class after assignment is given. Late assignments are accepted with a 10 point reduction in points for each school day it's late (capped at 40 points). A zero in the grade book indicates a missing assignment.

We will usually have many graded assignments for both Reading and Language Arts, meaning we will probably drop the lowest grades in some categories.

Grading policies for 5th grade
  • Late Work Policy - All late work is accepted, with notification in the gradebook that the assignment was late (with a penalty for being late).
  • Missing Work Policy - If not turned in at the end of the nine weeks, a grade of 50 is entered in the grade book.
  • Corrections Policy - All students scoring a "D" or "F" are allowed to re-do in order to earn up to a 74%. Students have 1 week from original assignment to re-do the work and turn it in. There are no re-dos on Summative Assessments.
  • Extra Credit Policy - There is never extra credit.
  • Grade Update Frequency - Grades are updated at least once a week.
  • "Zero" Policy - The lowest grade a student can receive is a 50% because a zero makes it nearly impossible for a student to recover concerning their grade average.
  • Graded work sent home - Graded papers will be sent home at least once a week.

Our class is Advanced Content (AC), meaning that we will work a little faster, with more content, and higher expectations than an "on-level" class. Inferencing and problem-solving skills will be stressed.

Spelling Sorts - Spelling sorts will be assigned based on the Spelling Inventory results. No spelling assignments will be given during shortened weeks because of the time needed to master the skill.
